fdis-pi-dayFudan International School (FDIS) celebrated its annual Piπ) Day on 14 March because the date contains the first three digits of π when written in the month day format (3/14).

Math department teachers organized a variety of activities. Students learned to square large numbers quickly with mental math and to measure the circumference of circles without rulers.

In the Lego activity, teams were given the same number of Lego blocks to build structures with the biggest dimensions. Connect 4 is a game that requires both intelligence and tact. Students competed against each other to be the first to connect four discs in a row. Though the Kenken puzzles turned out to be much harder than they seemed, students were able to overcome the challenge through good teamwork. In the game 24 O’clock, students combined creative thinking and mathematical skills to solve the highest number of problems within a timeframe.

The highlight of the day was the Marshmallow Challenge, a very popular activity among the students. Using tape and spaghetti, students had to construct ‘spaghetti towers’ that were sturdy enough to hold the weight of one marshmallow.

The homemade pies sponsored by the Baking and Cooking Club rounded out the event.
