Caring for our environment is a message that all school children should learn if they are going to be responsible citizens of the future. This is a message that the children of Shanghai Rego International School understand very well thanks to the creation of a fully organic vegetable and flower garden.rego-eco-garden-s

The project was started as part of a Roots & Shoots project and began with a patch of land on the edge of the running track. With such poor quality soil, there was a need to create good quality compost and so the children began bringing in dry leaves, egg shells, coffee grinds and newspaper, and collecting leftover vegetables from the school canteen. Under the watchful eye of class teacher, Gary Ilines, and with the hard work of the Rego students, the garden started to grow. With the kind support of Austen Morris we could grow the garden area and fence it off.

There are now six beds assigned to different year groups in the school, with carrots, lettuces, kale, radishes, tomatoes, parsley, green beans and pumpkins growing strongly. The original bed has already been harvested and the kale and lettuce plants were sold at the school’s recent Earth Fair.

There are also plans to create a Children’s garden at the school, with plants grown organically by the children and for the children.
