nord-anglia-juilliardThe British International School, Shanghai Puxi (BISS Puxi) and Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong (NAIS Pudong), the two international schools in Shanghai operated by Nord Anglia Education (NAE) have become two of the first schools in its family to benefit from a new collaboration between the leading premium school organization and The Juilliard School, the world renowned performing arts conservatory in New York.

BISS Puxi and NAIS Pudong are among the 10 inaugural NAE schools worldwide to roll out at the beginning of September 2015 an enhanced embedded music curriculum developed by curriculum and music experts at both Juilliard and NAE.

The curriculum is based around a repertoire of 12 core categories of music, each is exemplified by an iconic work ranging from Ambush from Ten Sides, a traditional Chinese pipa solo, to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and several extensions works for further exploration. Carefully chosen by Juilliard, these works cover a wide range of cultures, genres and historical periods, and aim to open the door to categories of music and fundamentals essential for all young people to know and experience.

“We are trying to present classical music in an engaging way,” said Charlotte Rakowski, Head of Music at BISS Puxi. As one of the 30 music staff from NAE schools worldwide who attended the Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme Journey to New York this summer, Rakowski found the CPD “incredibly inspirational”. “I came back with a lot of great ideas that have been implemented, and all the music staff are happy using the programme and have implemented it in their lessons,” she said.  She is also excited about having access to the abundant teaching materials, recordings and videos of Juilliard: “Now when I teach a music piece of an instrument I cannot play, I can show the Juilliard video of the exact piece to my students.”

Besides training the NAE teachers, Juilliard also provides on-site support via regular visits by its curriculum specialists, teaching artists and touring performers, according to Andrea Lee, cellist and music curriculum specialist who is visiting BISS Puxi and NAIS Pudong to assess the implementation of the programme and work with local music staff to see if any adjustment is needed.

“The music curriculum is designed for all students, not just those who are serious about learning an instrument or musical performance,” introduced Kevin Foyle, Principal at BISS Puxi. “Nord Anglia believes that working with such a highly-regarded institution and giving students direct access to Juilliard performers and teaching artists will help inspire them in their studies. Ultimately, the curriculum aims to nurture cultural literacy and develop key skills in students, such as discipline, creativity and confidence that will enable them to succeed anywhere in the world once they’ve left school.”

The music curriculum is the first phase of the collaboration between Nord Anglia and Juilliard. After school programme and private one-to-one music lessons will be launched from the beginning of 2016 with the support from local Juilliard alumni and Juilliard certified teachers at selected schools. This will be followed by the launch of the first Juilliard/NAE Summer School next year in Switzerland which will be open to all NAE students around the world. Moreover, drama and dance curriculums will also be rolled out to all Nord Anglia schools over the coming years.
