New WISS Theatre a Box Office Smash

wiss-theatre-newsThe Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) opened its new ‘Orsini Theatre’ in October 2013 and has been packing in the audiences ever since. Their first Dinner Theatre piece All in the Timing left its audience amazed by a barrage of lightning-quick, razor-sharp wit interspersed with course after course of haute cuisine. Completely sold out within days of being publicized, this live stage and music event combined good food, good wine, and explosive ‘in your face’ entertainment – enough to stimulate the most jaded appetite. Requests for more mixed medium shows are already flooding in to Darren Scully, the WISS Artistic Director, who developed the concept from projects he has led in a number of other ground-breaking schools across Europe and Asia.

This idea is new to international schools in Shanghai and it was risky; with the whole community coming together to create impeccably timed comedy that made you think as well as laugh out loud. Guests were seated at stylish dining areas nestled between islands of raised stage, pools of light scattered through the audience – eating, eyes-wide, twinkling by candle light. The velvet-curtained recesses of the WISS Orsini Theatre were complemented by a host of attentive 16-year-old student waiters, doing their bit to add to the ambience and provide blissfully silent, efficient, five-star service. Their classmates, teachers and performing artists from the wider community joined in to create a unique feast of sight, sound, and soulful insouciance.

The mark of good theatre is to transport you to another time and place, and in this All in the Timing certainly did not disappoint: taking audience effortlessly from the packed streets of Manhattan, through the laid back café scene of Paris, to the huddled favelas of Santiago. Service was continual between the atolls of avid diners, as the serving staff and performers became interchangeable in a flurry of movement, using drama, poetry, chanting, dance, street art, and live, original music to drive their message home. Every bite was as delicious as it was delectable.

So, by popular demand, there will be more WISS Dinner Theatre in 2014, seasoning an evening’s entertainment with a touch of first class mastication. These events are surely not to be missed.
