Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) is preparing a new Music and Drama program in its Secondary School for the 2010/2011 academic year. Students in Grade 6 and Grade 7 will study one semester of Visual Arts and one semester of Music and Drama (MaD), thus giving them a cross section of all the major arts WISS intends to stimulate within the school community. As it develops, the Drama option will be extended right up to Diploma Theatre in Grade 11 and Grade 12. WISS is capitalizing on its new Science, Technology and Arts building to nurture its students’ love for the arts.wiss-mad-s

The Visual Arts Program involves students exploring creative self-expression, media techniques and skills, and risk-taking as they engage in the process of creating art such as painting on canvas, sculpture, printmaking, collage, ceramics, tile mosaic, paper mache and drawing. “Students explore visual problems which are the foundation of our strong visual inquiry process,” explained Art Department Head Jaia Tucker. “This provides students with a framework to learn through experience while allowing for the opportunity of unique self expression.”

Also, in addition to the launch of the instrumental program, the WISS Music Performance Group has commenced – an all-singing, all-playing and all-dancing group. There will be solo and choir singing and instrumental playing that will culminate in a show later in the year to celebrate music making at WISS.
