On 17 October, Morgan Henry Bilingual Kindergarten (MHBK) hosted a free lecture called ‘Parenting for Optimal Learning Outcomes’. It provided parents with new ways of thinking about disciplining children that support them becoming life-long learners, such as encouragement, limited choices, and allowing children to do things for themselves. The presenter was Jill Stansbury, the English Co-Principal at Morgan Henry Bilingual Kindergarten. Stansbury is a certified trainer for the Positive Discipline Association and an educator with over twenty years of experience as a teacher and school administrator.

Parents learned what Positive Discipline is and some effective tools to improve their children’s learning outcomes through participating in discussion and interactive activities. Positive Discipline is based on the work of Alfred Alder and his colleague Rudolf Dreikurs. It has nothing to do with punishment and everything to do with teaching valuable social and life skills. The principles of it help build a relationship of love and respect between parents and children, helping them to solve problems together for many years to come.

The mission of Morgan Henry Bilingual School is to be attentive to the small matters nourishing young children to love, to explore, to create, and to ultimately become engaged global citizens. MHBK serves students from one and a half to six years of age in the Huacao Town area of the Minhang District and is located just outside of the Shanghai Racquet Club and Forest Manor Neighborhoods at 567 Jinfeng Road. For more information about this brand new school, see the school’s website at www.shmhkids.org.
