million-tree-awardsOn June 8th, the Million Tree Project (MTP) team was proud to honor this year’s top school forest donors who completed the 1,000 Tree Challenge just before the 2012 MTP forest donation deadline.  Shanghai American School - Puxi Grade 4 teacher Ms Dena Zingales contacted Roots & Shoots with a donation of RMB 87, 579.10!

The 4th graders, along with the entire elementary school, worked hard to organize a school-wide walk-a-thon fundraiser. The walk-a-thon fundraiser had students find sponsors to pledge money for every lap walked around the track. Over a period of two weeks, students got as much fresh air and exercise as they could on the SAS Puxi grounds, all in the name of saving the Earth. Their efforts resulted in 3,503 trees being donated to this year’s forest. With the help of SAS Puxi and Pudong’s high school teams, the trees were planted this past April. In the next ten years, the trees will offset nearly 900,000 kg of CO2.

During SAS Puxi’s year-end awards ceremony Jerry Liang, the Vice-President of the R&S High School Club,  enraptured the young audience, parents, and teachers. His stories of saving the environment and his experience planting trees in Inner Mongolia were captivating. He offered inspiring words about his journey through SAS Puxi from kindergarten to high school and his current position as VP of the R&S Club, ending with an appeal for the audience to care for the environment around them.

A video created by the older students took elementary kids through the small town of Kulun Qi, giving a step-by-step look at the hard work that goes into planting and maintaining their trees.  After seeing pictures and learning how their contributions are mitigating desertification in China, R&S awarded special honor certificates to seven classes who each raised more than RMB 3, 000. Each class representative was called to the stage to proudly accept the awards on behalf of their class.

MTP also awarded one student representative an Outstanding Achievement Award. Fourth grader Isabelle So, who managed to individually raise nearly RMB 20,000 in tree donations – a feat that even very few of our company friends reach! These funds would qualify 10-year-old Isabelle for an individual forest-and-a-half in Kulun Qi, Inner Mongolia! When asked how she managed to raise so much money for the environment, she humbly replied, “Whenever I had a chance during breaks or after school… I just walked around the track more. Truth is, I also had a great time walking around the track with all my friends.  When the walk-a-thon was over, I was so happy and surprised that I earned enough money to plant an entire forest.”

It is with great thanks that R&S has honored Shanghai American School’s continuous environmental dedication and outstanding leadership. With nearly 10,000 trees donated from both campuses this year alone, the school has now contributed 21,147 trees to the Million Tree Project!
