biss-pd-jubilee-lunchMore than 1,400 students, parents and friends of The British International School Shanghai - Pudong campus celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a Big Lunch on Friday, June 1st.

The Big Lunch concept is a very simple idea from the Eden Project, an eco-tourist attraction in the south of England. The aim is to get as many people as possible to have lunch with their neighbors in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.

The British International School students enjoyed an al-fresco lunch complete with red, white and blue cupcakes seated on long banquet-style tables decked out in red, white and blue. The students waved flags and counted down to a massive balloon launch, creating a sea of red, white and blue balloons into the air above the school.

The children were joined by parents and members of the Parents and Friends Association and the school’s Strategic Advisory Board.  Executive Principal, Dr Terry Creissen OBE, commented, “It is truly a unique experience to be able to celebrate our proud British heritage and the reign of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, here in China so far away from home. In the true international nature of the school, all nationalities embraced the spirit of the day and were united in celebration.”

Last year, on Sunday, June 5th, the best part of two million people in the UK and around the world took part in The Big Lunch. The school in Pudong was one of the only schools in China to celebrate with a street-style party to celebrate the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton on April 29th, 2011. In 2012, The Big Lunch fell on the same weekend as The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Sunday, June 3rd and – as announced by Buckingham Palace – The Big Jubilee Lunch was a part of the main program of events over the central weekend of the Diamond Jubilee.  .
