More than 90 parents attended Joy EL International Academy Parent Workshop on 30 August. Joy EL invited the inspirational counselor Mark Layng to explain the characteristics of excellent parenting.

Layng has a Masters in Counseling and a total of 27 years of counseling experience in both the United States and China. He is licensed in the US as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

joy-el-parenting-talkIt is clear that in the current era of international education, test scores and examination results are no longer the only indicators of a child’s future potential. Conventional measures, while still relevant, are to be complimented by demonstrations and evaluations of a child’s emotional style and his or her soft skills. Layng proposed suggestions on how parents should behave.

Firstly, they should realize the importance of cultivating creativity and freedom of thought in their children. At the same time, they should set clear boundaries for their children, but also for themselves. Parents should control their own emotions and deal with problems that their children may have with common sense and patience, not with anger or stress.

Secondly, parents should limit the time that their children spend on devices, particularly playing games. They should show trust, encourage self-discipline in their children, and reward them when they respect the trust and freedom that they have been given. A combination of freedom with healthy boundaries is beneficial for healthy development.

Parents should communicate with teachers, certainly, but they must not forget to communicate with their children, especially when they face anxiety and stress. He explained how parents should work at using the “Five Languages of Love” with their children.

These “languages” include spending quality time with one’s children, having physical contact, using affirmative speech, and giving rewards. By consciously making an effort to use these ‘languages’, parents can provide the most effective of communication environments to help their children grow.
