Based upon an old European folk tale, the story of Beauty and the Beast was first committed to print in the early 18th century by the French writer Mme Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.

isb-beautybeast-sThe version that will play out at the International School of Beijing in April originated in the Disney studios as an animated movie in the early 1990s. It was subsequently rewritten as a full-length Broadway show, with stunning music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors, Aladdin, etc.) Additional lyrics were supplied by Tim Rice (Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita, and more).

Among the many notable features of this musical are the strong, independent-minded yet compassionate heroine, Belle; the ridiculously egocentric alpha-male Gaston; and the tragically flawed prince, condemned to live inside a beast’s body as punishment for his youthful hubris.

Don’t miss the chance to see this terrific show. There will be four performances: two 7pm evening shows on Friday April 9th and Friday April 16th; and two 4pm matinees (especially for younger audiences) on Saturday April 10th and Saturday April 17th. Admission is free.
