On May 28th, the International School of Beijing (ISB) community came together in a festive farewell to departing Head of School, Dr. Tom Hawkins, who leaves at the conclusion of the current school year. Hundreds of parents, alumni, staff, and friends of the school were on hand at his farewell party for an evening full of warmth and good wishes.

Dr. Hawkins arrived in Beijing in 2002 to serve as High School Principal; he became Head of School in 2005, the 10th head in ISB history. Through the journey of the past five years, Dr. Hawkins has devoted himself in taking ISB from good to great, by developing a world-class faculty, helping the students reach their unique potential and contribute positively to society, creating a world-class curriculum in Learning21@ISB, as well as encouraging professional development within the ISB faculty.

“But greatness is not a destination; rather, it is the journey from good to great which encapsulates the learning process. And so the journey will continue…with new leaders and teachers, new students and parents, in the years to come. Renewal is the beauty of a school,” said Dr. Hawkins. “I am happy to have made the journey with all of you. I am proud to be ISB… past, present and future.”

Dr. Hawkins and his family move to Belgium, where he will be head of St. John’s International School in Waterloo.

Farewell, but no goodbye.
