isb-mother-tonguee589afe69cacThe International School of Beijing (ISB) Elementary School Library hosted an after school party on December 2nd, 2010 to celebrate the opening of the Mother Tongue Collection of books in languages other than English. A great number of students, parents, teachers, and the administrators turned out at the party. It was wonderful to see the eyes of the children twinkle over the books in their mother tongue while the adults joyfully discussed the collection’s great potential for encouraging students’ mother tongue development and celebrating the multilingual community of ISB.

The collection now has books in Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish and Thai.

According to Manatsu McCluskey, Elementary School Librarian, ISB will continue to purchase non-English language books to add to this collection; meanwhile the library welcomes donations of new or good condition used books. Recently it has received a wonderful gift of 700 books in Korean from the ISB’s Korean Parent Teacher Association. The donation was made to mark the 30th anniversary of ISB.

“The books will be a wonderful addition to the collection, and we sincerely thank the members of the ISB community for their extremely generous support,” said McCluskey.
