ISB Math Night On March 19, a “Family Math Night” that included more than twenty games and activities took place at International School of Beijing (ISB) and was attended by 250 first and second grade students and parents.

The event mainly targeted the first and second grades, but some pre-schoolers and upper elementary students also attended with their family.

The main goal of the evening was to introduce ISB parents to math activities that take place in the classroom, highlighting the rigor in the ISB math program and how math games reinforce the concepts the school teaches its children. In addition, the event also aimed to create an enjoyable mathematical experience that would offer challenging and engaging learning experiences for everyone.

The evening was planned and hosted by the ISB Lower Elementary Math Curriculum Committee, with help from most of the lower elementary teachers. ISB PTA also supported in providing funds for the math bags that were handed out to each student.

The Math Night focused on Number and Operation, Algebra, and Geometry, which are three of the five math disciplines that are the backbone of the ISB math program. In many of the activities, the student and parents had to use their problem solving, estimating, and computational skills.

ISB had invited parents to similar activities to highlight its curriculum, but the Math Night was the first event on such a large scale.

“We look forward to offering more Math Nights in the future. It was great to see so many students and parents excited about math, said Linda Brubaker, one of the organizing teachers.
