isb-fashion-2sFebruary 4th 7.00 p.m. was a hive of activity as student leaders Sophia Maltesen and Amelia Park prepared for the first ever large-scale charity fashion show – One-Child One-Egg Charity Fashion Show at the International School of Beijing (ISB).

More than 200 guests were lining up at the Silent Bid Auction foyer to get into the show where the students had erected a catwalk stage and backdrop to showcase designs from seven ISB students and clothes from Only and Jack and Jones, the main apparel sponsors.

The project was conceived in November 2009 by Sophia Maltesen and Amelia Park who started to put things together along with 40 other ISB student volunteers from January 10th onwards. In less than 3 weeks of frantic after-school work, the organizers managed to attract sponsors, promote the event and work out the logistics. The Fashion show was also held at Dara Furniture at #798 Art District on 6th February for more than 50 guests.

Mr. Hillman, Communications Director of ISB said, “This project was very much a student-initiated, student-led and student-participated project that is aligned with ISB’s learning strategies. It was a great evening for all.”

Dara owner Patrick Zhang said, “I was impressed with the talent at ISB. Maybe we can do it again next year”.

Thanks to sponsors like Bestseller, Dara, Crumpler, Nestle, Grand Hyatt, Westin, Sheraton, Lufthansa, Nestle, Flo Prestige, Samsung, Grifted and Catherine de France (hair stylists and make-up artists), they were able to more than quadruple their initial target of Rmb11, 000 to Rmb43,597.60 plus a donation from ISB’s PTA of Rmb15,000 to a final sum of over Rmb58,000.

Winner of the Judges’ choice for design was Sophia Maltesen with her ethnic Miao -inspired evening wear. The People’s Choice Award went to Stephy Tian for her film-noir inspired collection of flirty dresses.

Mrs. Kathleen Mojeiko, an ISB parent summed up, “The fashion show brought together ISB high school students and the larger Beijing community for a really fun evening that will change the lives of young students in Sichuan. For any young person who wonders if they can make a difference, let this event be your inspiration. You can make the world a better place and a have a great time in the process.”
