ycis-bj-storyteller-1It is rare that Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) has visitors to the school who have come from abroad and are versed in the art of storytelling. On October 6th, YCIS students from K4 in Early Childhood Education (ECE) to Year 6 were invited to listen to Sef Townsend, a renowned international storyteller from the UK.

Townsend presented the students with a variety of stories from all over the world. His unique storytelling style had every child (and teacher) entranced. He had a magical way of drawing everyone into his tale, causing time and place to disappear as the audience imagined themselves swaying on the back of a camel with an ancient trader crossing the Silk Road or beside an elderly Korean gentleman waiting for the first fruits from his chestnut tree!

Townsend’s stories have been drawn from his own personal experiences as he travelled the world, meeting people in different lands and listening to their stories. Each session that he presented was peppered with the colors of his stories. Townsend himself is an interesting character having lost his hearing in an IRA bomb in London. He learnt to “sign” and became involved in the Irish peace process. He continues to improve this skill today as well as continue his passion of storytelling.
