As part of the continuing work of Western Academy of Beijing’s Libraries Team, authors and illustrators Tom Birdseye, Anne Spudvilas, Ann James and Gillian Cross visited the school in March, working with students, teachers and parents. Each author/illustrator worked brought a unique set of experiences and skills, and each inspired students to enrich their own work.

Tom Birdseye gave presentations to students and then spoke to parents about how they can be helpful and supportive of their child through the writing process and how parents can be more informed when it comes to the writing process.

Anne Spudvilas spoke to Grade 4 classes about her work as an illustrator, with particular focus on The Peasant Prince (by Li Cunxin and Anne Spudvilas – a picture book version of Mao’s Last Dance), and then ran Master Class sessions with a group of promising artists from Grades 3-5.

Ann James shared her love of illustrating with Grade 3 classes during presentations and art workshops and spoke about how pictures bring the stories to life.

Gillian Cross worked with Middle School English and humanities classes to develop creativity, story ideas and frameworks in her “Story from a bag” workshops. Students brought in small, unrelated items to contribute to a group bag, and Cross creatively used the bags to elicit story frameworks from the class.
