ssis-suzhou-authors-jenevieveDuring March Suzhou Singapore International School (SSIS) hosted three internationally renowned authors in conjunction with the Bookworm Literary Festival.

The Bookworm Literary Festival brings the best writers and thinkers to China every year. This year SSIS and the Bookworm Literary Festival joined forces to bring three internationally renowned authors to SSIS to speak with students: Jenevieve Chang, Bidisha and Bernardo Fernandez.

Jenevieve Chang is a storyteller, writer and actor who has worked in Australia, London and Shanghai. Whilst living in Shanghai, Chang also became a starring showgirl at the city’s first Vaudeville, Variety and Burlesque club, upon which her forthcoming memoir, The Good Girl of Chinatown, is based.

Born in London, Bidisha is a writer, broadcaster and activist specializing in gender issues, social justice and international affairs. Her most recent publication was the internationally acclaimed and best-selling reportage, Beyond the Wall: Writing a Path Through Palestine (2012).

Bernardo Fernandez, aka BEF, is a writer, storyteller and graphic novelist from Mexico City. He has published four novels, two short-stories collections, four children’s books and three graphic novels. He is widely recognized as one of the best contemporary Mexican writers.

Secondary English teacher, Leeanne Smith, explains the reason for inviting authors and storytellers to SSIS, “Students at SSIS are encouraged to explore ways in which they can discover and express feelings, values, ideas, beliefs and culture. Inviting authors and storytellers into our school is an exciting way in which we can assist students to do this, while at the same time they are able to appreciate and enjoy the variety of creativity that comes with such talent.”
