HQIS Gives Back to the Community

hqis-giving-tree-3The act of giving can bring as much (or more!) happiness than receiving. This is exactly what the students at Hong Qiao International School (HQIS) experienced at the Giving Tree Ceremony.

The HQIS community generously sponsored more than 200 migrant children in this year’s Giving Tree – the highest number in the nine years of participation! The Grade 2 students attended the ceremony as part of their unit of inquiry on organizations. After a few donor speeches and a performance by the students, they headed to the classrooms.

Anxiously awaiting their gifts, the migrant children, in their perfect rows, smiled as HQIS Grade 2 students passed out each gift bag. One…two…three…open them! Excitedly the children pulled out each gift, their eyes lighting up. As the children opened their gifts, the students began interacting with them, helping them open their gifts, playing with their toys, and asking them questions. It was heartwarming to see them becoming fast friends, despite the language barrier.

After all the gifts had been handed out and “xie xie’s” had been exchanged, the students all headed out to the playground. HQIS children spent the next hour playing with the migrant school children, learning new games, and laughing together. On the way home, one student asked, “When are we going to come back and play with our new friends?”
