harrow-u13-fobissea-sThis year Harrow International School Beijing was pleased to send its largest U13 Athletics and swimming teams to the FOBISSEA (Federation of British Schools in South East Asia) tournament. It was also the furthest the young Harrovians sport teams had been, as the tournament was held at Dulwich College in Suzhou from the 18th to the 21st of May.

The team of 30 intrepid Harrow athletes prepared to leave Harrow on the Wednesday morning full of excitement at the thought of the sporting challenges that lay ahead. Off to the airport and after a journey full of discussions about Harrow’s chances of success, they arrived at the stylish hotel looking forward to three days of tough competition.

“I am pleased to report over the three days all the Harrow students excelled on and off the pitch; they truly were a charming group to supervise. Everybody threw themselves into the spirit of the competition without fail and learnt many new skills whilst realising the importance of team spirit and supporting each other. This is what events like FOBISSEA are all about,” Mr Jamie Murray, coach, commented on the trip.

The Harrow team achieved great success, winning the boys’ basketball, placing second in girls’ football and receiving a score of medals in both the swimming and the athletics. On an individual level many school records were broken and there were numerous individuals who took the lead, shining in the team events. Every student enjoyed the experience and looking back could clearly identify something positive they had learnt about themselves that they previously had not realized.

As it said on the t-shirts of the travelling students: “sport doesn’t create character…it reveals it”.
