harrow-shanghai-international-day_2The Harrow International School Shanghai community of pupils, teachers and parents came together to celebrate the School’s second International Day at the end of September.

They did not disappoint. Even the musical school bells were changed to different national anthems. Pupils were dressed in national costume or as iconic national figures including kings, literary characters and inventors. Teachers were unrecognizable in funny wigs and brightly colored costumes and the parents showed off their cooking skills. Twenty of Harrow’s twenty-six nationalities came together to prepare traditional foods from their countries to awaken the taste buds of all Harrovians with a splendid food fair. There was everything from Turkish kebabs to Mexican guacamole and even some Marmite sandwiches.

The Prep/Senior Student Council created an international activity fair raising money for Harrow’s charities. The UK hosted the game, “If this is the answer, what is the question?”, China got everyone’s tongues in knots with their riddles and tongue-twisters, but Canada was definitely the most popular giving away adorable Canadian moose for those Harrovians who could throw a hoop onto the jar.

The children in Pre-Prep travelled around the world during the day taking part in various activities. Tasks included creating aboriginal Australian dot paintings, Egyptian jewellery, making national flags from different countries, crafting Ming Dynasty plate designs, learning French songs and building the Eiffel Tower out of spaghetti.

Each section of the school also held a special assembly, focusing on what ‘nationality’ means.

International Day was a fantastic day because every single one of the Harrow community contributed in some way.
