Golden Wings International Kindergarten (GWIK) has recently devoted a whole week to explaining and discussing the various risks that can occur both at school and at home. The aim was to help the children recognise different risks and feel comfortable with different safety procedures.

During this week, they looked at stranger danger, carried out earthquake drills and learned about fire safety. The children were encouraged to handle various safety equipment to help dispel any anxieties. There was also a practical role play to help fully explain the safety procedures.

gwik-1sDuring the Fire Safety Day, teachers explained to the kids about a variety of fire dangers and how to handle them. And children spent an enthusiastic half -hour practising the “stop, drop and roll” safety procedure. Much to the childrens’ delight, they visited the local fire station and met the fire fighters.

At the fire station, the children were able to see for themselves the training and discipline needed to become a firefighter. The firefighters demonstrated their different uniforms, how to use their equipment and how quickly they can respond to an emergency call. The children were then able to try on some of the firefighting equipment before being given a detailed tour of the big fire engines, with explanations of what each piece of equipment is used for. They returned from this trip very impressed, and were much more alert to possible fire dangers and how to minimise them.
