german-school-meets-costa-4545The German School Shanghai - Pudong started a new social education concept that includes a series of events taking place regularly throughout the school year. Part of this social curriculum is a late-night interview with fascinating or public persons, organized by students of grade nine and supported by their teachers in ethics, politics and history.

An audience of about 180 people witnessed the opening event at the end of May. The guest at the unforgettable evening was Mr Pierantonio Costa, former Consul of Italy between 1988 and 2003 in Kigali, Ruanda. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 and was awarded the “Gold Medal for Civil Valor” because of his extraordinary involvement during the 100-day genocide in Ruanda in 1994. By the time the genocide was over, he had lost assets worth well over US$3 million and had rescued almost 2,000 people, including the lives of more than 350 children from a Red Cross orphanage.

During the evening it was not only the story of this important part of his life, but above all his charismatic and modest character, that touched everyone deeply. When one of the students asked him if he sometimes thinks of how many more children he could have saved, he said: “Every day.”

By the end of the evening it was clear to everyone: meeting Pierantonio Costa as an example of how to act bravely, from conviction and with good conscience had been the chance of a lifetime.
