Fun-filled Summer Fayre at Wellington Tianjin

On 11 May, Wellington College International Tianjin opened its gates to over eight hundred pupils, parents and friends of the school for their annual Summer Fayre.

The Fayre began with a feast of instrumental pieces, singing and dancing from both junior and senior pupils, including the winners of the House Talent shows. The Master of Wellington College, Mr. David Cook, then officially declared the Summer Fayre open.

Individual nationalities were represented across the arena in the shape of an International Food Hall, featuring delicious foods and sumptuous cuisines hailing from North and South America, China, Korea, France, Germany and the UK, thanks to fantastic efforts from our parents.

An impressive array of activities and games were arranged for all ages. The Sports Hall hosted an enormously popular bouncy castle and play area for younger children, whilst outside, fun for all the family could be had at a great range of games stalls, offering such delights as Bat the Rat, Ring the Bottle, Guess the Number of Sweets, Flog a Frog, Toss the Beanbag, Hook the Duck and Balloon Burst. One of the star attractions was the opportunity to throw wet sponges at teachers, including both the Master and the Deputy Head – perhaps unsurprisingly, this was a real crowd-puller! For those wishing to relax, there were masseuses and nail artists too. A striking highlight was a vibrant performance from a troop of traditional Chinese stilt walkers, who put on an excellent display of dance routines to ethnic music.

Events were wrapped up with an awards ceremony for the Summer Fayre t-shirt and poster competition, where the winners and runners up were presented with their original designs in a frame. An auction of specially prepared Summer Fayre baskets followed, along with the raffle draw, with chances to win wines, cheeses, restaurant and hotel vouchers, Chinese antiques and iPad Minis!

The event was made possible by the hard work of not only the Wellington staff, but most significantly by the growing international parent and pupil community at Wellington. Everyone in the school is extremely grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm that went into making this year’s Summer Fayre a resounding success.
