Just a week before the Chinese New Year holiday, Fudan International School (FIS) students and faculty joined with international forces in the hope of helping Haiti regain their balance.

The organizers of a weeklong fundraising event, Ms. Yaya Yuan and Mr. Tom Bojko, spent a hectic week arranging events and selling various items. Ms. Yaya and the Environment Club sold baked goods during 9th period and Ms. Natsai Nyakudarika and the Community Service club soon joined in. Ms. Hale Dere’s beading club sold jewelry as holiday gifts. T-shirts and sweatshirts for Haiti were also available for sale just outside of the student lounge and before you knew it, everyone at FIS was seen modeling FIS attire.fis-haiti-1s

With the help of the PTA and other parents, FIS was able to gain extraordinary raffle prizes ranging from a two-night stay at the Marriott Hotel to free coupons for McDonalds. These gifts caught the attention of many students at FIS as everyone hastily bought their raffle tickets. One student in particular was so determined to win that he bought 700 RMB worth of raffle tickets. “I won coupons for Salabim’s, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, McDonalds, KFC, and a two-night stay at the Marriott Hotel,” listed Chikara Ohara. “But, I don’t really care about the prizes,” he added. “I mean… I spent over seven hundred RMB to help the people in Haiti and that’s all that matters. I don’t really care about anything else.” A student vs. teacher basketball game was also held as well as a free throw competition sponsored by the basketball players, teachers, friends, and family.

In the end, FIS raised over 20,000 RMB to donate to Haiti. The week of fundraising activities also created a bonding experience for FIS that has brought the entire school closer together.
