bcis-experience-china-week-2From 20 to 24 April the Experience China Week (ECW) at the Elementary School and Early Childhood Center of Beijing City International School was held. Each year, there are two ECWs, one for the Secondary School in the autumn, and one for ECC and Elementary in the spring. It’s a prominent, much-loved feature in the school’s calendar each year because it is a fantastic opportunity for the students to really connect with Chinese culture.

For the lower grade levels, many of the activities take place on campus, and include things such as fan dancing, Chinese games, cooking, calligraphy, Kung Fu and much more. Some of the children go off-campus to visit areas of Beijing such as the Temple of Heaven, local hutongs, and the Hou Hai area where Grade 1 took fantastic rickshaw rides around the lake. Students in Grades 4 and 5 went on very special trips to Tianjin and Pingyao respectively. These trips are good preparation for higher grade levels, when trips out of Beijing are more common as an opportunity.

The BCIS community believes very strongly that students at the school should have chances to find connections with their host country, China. There are 5,000 years of history, culture and heritage to explore, and ECW is a great way for students to spend a significant portion of time learning about and better understanding the country’s culture.
