Exciting Changes at Shanghai American School
Shanghai American School (SAS), Puxi Middle School was delighted to advance Theron Mott into his new position as the new Principal for SAS Middle School at its Puxi Campus and welcome his collaboration with SAS Puxi’s new Vice Principal, Glen Karlsson.
Aside from SAS Puxi’s fully renovated contemporary cafeteria and SAS Pudong’s bright and welcoming reception area, SAS Pudong anxiously awaits the opening of a stunning Performing Arts Center at the end of October.
This 750-seat auditorium, complete with ascending orchestra pit, will be home to Shanghai’s only IB Dance program performers. This dance curriculum aims for a holistic approach to dance as its students embrace a variety of dance traditions and dance cultures by study and application through writing, creating and performing.
SAS Puxi is proud to launch their Professional Learning Communities program and with it, the new bell schedule that features embedded opportunities for students to delve into their interests with an Exploratory Program, and also receive support and extension in their academics through Extended Learning.
Shanghai American School believes that language should not be a barrier to any student who wants an outstanding education and the skills to excel at any university in the world. With that goal in mind, SAS this autumn is proud to launch the Intensive English as an Additional Language (IEAL) program for Grade 6 and 7 at its Pudong Campus! Using innovative, research-based teaching strategies and a combination of small, specialized classes with mainstream integration, students develop high-level, balanced English literacy as well as active learning and research skills. With technology woven into the program, they also acquire key 21st century learning skills, including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.
An exciting and hands-on elective program called the “Caring for Coral Program” is now available to Middle School Pudong students. Affiliated with the organization “Coral Watch,” students are trained in SAS PD’s Olympic-sized pool in the skills of snorkeling and diving. Once certified, they apply their knowledge to collecting coral data for “Coral Watch” during their Philippines excursion. Shanghai American School believes in empowering students to follow their passion and contribute to world sustainability.
