On March 24, Mr. Derek Nicholls from Trinity College London arrived to examine the third cohort of residents from Home Sweet Home on their spoken English. The few months prior to this exam have been nerve wracking as volunteers, most of whom have had no formal training, conscientiously followed the Trinity College syllabus as they prepared their students. The volunteers consist of students, teachers and parents from Dulwich College Shanghai community and they meet every Tuesday night to offer their expertise. Some also volunteer on other days by going directly to the Home Sweet Home residence to offer back-up support.dcsh-trinity-s
It is delightful to hear that every single one of the 20 examinees passed with flying colors in a mixture of Grades 1 to 5. As many of the Home Sweet Home residents have disabilities (blindness, severe physical impairments) and are from orphanages, it was a huge challenge preparing them for exams that request them to “pick up the blue pen” “walk to the door” and “tell me about your family.” Many creative ways were developed to enable the residents to cope with these tasks and a lot of fun was had along the way! Enormous thanks must go to our wonderful volunteers, who have worked so hard to ensure this fantastic success.
The Giving Back Program also runs courses in pinyin, sports, guitar and computing skills. This gives the residents from Home Sweet Home a rare opportunity to improve their skills in different areas and increase their potential to gain their own employment. Since Dulwich College Shanghai initiated the workplace Corporate Social Responsibility Program two years ago and provided jobs for four trainees from Home Sweet Home, many other companies are taking up the challenge by offering work-place opportunities.
