Kathleen sits on the Executive Board of the International Association of College Admissions Counseling and has played a key role in developing the programs assisting international students around the world.

Sonali Hutchison has worked for the last 7 years in university counseling and joined Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong after working for two years in Dhaka and for many years at schools in the Philippines.

Kyndra Douglass is in her second year at Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong having worked in university admissions as well as several student programs in the US and internationally.

All University Counselors hold Master’s Degrees in the field of education, counseling and higher education.

Andy Clapperton completes the team of four, assisting with the Oxford and Cambridge applications as well as organizing the interview scheme for all applications, including medicine.

The University Counseling Team start meeting with students in Year 7. For these early years, the focus is on getting students to start thinking about their future plans and start setting goals. As their academic and extracurricular interests develop the Counselors introduce the idea of learning styles and details about career clusters and pathways of interest, identifying possible careers that match their personality types and finding the best postsecondary options for those careers.

Towards the end of Year 9 the Counselors help students to use this information to reflect and choose IGCSE subjects that they will then follow for the next two years.

During the second half of Senior School, starting in Year 10, the Counselors continue to meet with every student in classes and individually with increasing regularity. In Year 10 and Year 11, career education and planning for the International Baccalaureate (IB) course choices are part of the curriculum as well as how to make the most of Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong and the last four years. Counselors assist students in making more deliberate choices in their activities and how to identify and focus on combining skills and passions while participating in the different options of enrichment programs that exist in both the summer and throughout the school year. The emphasis in Years 10 and 11 is on setting and achieving the students’ goals and working towards their individual best.

Before students take their IGCSE exams, they meet with the Counselors in conjunction with the IB Coordinator on choosing their IB Diploma Program subjects, the curriculum they will follow for Years 12 and 13.

Counselors encourage students to take early assessments for university entry such as PSAT, Pre-ACT and the Morrisby, a career profile which helps them understand their aptitudes, their most suitable career interests, work style, and work place preferences. This helps them appreciate how their unique make-up can fit into the world of employment.

As the students move into Year 12 and Year 13, Counselors are dedicated to offering a bespoke university guidance service.  Students who are applying to highly selective universities around the world are encouraged to participate in “The Hive” in which they discuss interdisciplinary issues across curriculums.

They attend international workshops to speak directly with admissions officers and represent Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong on a global platform at conferences. A large part of their job is explaining to universities the unique educational and co-curricular opportunities presented to the Dulwich College International network of schools and making sure the students’ experiences and achievements are well-received and understood.

As a result, students at Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong are receiving the highest level of university counselling service among international schools.

The University Counselors have an open-door policy, meaning that any student or parent can have a consultation at any time.

Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong hosts over 100 individual and small group university visits a year, especially from the US, Europe, UK and Australia.  As most of the students study outside China after Senior School, it is important that they get a chance to meet with prospective university representatives. Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong students enjoy a strong reputation, as they are high achieving, sophisticated and active in the school community.

The University Counselors continually receive compliments on Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong students and how well they present themselves. While academics are certainly top-notch, the students continue to involve themselves inside and outside the classroom. Whether it be sports, performing arts, music or student-led clubs and activities, it is clear that Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong students are out to make a difference in the world.
