dulwich-geraldDulwich College Shanghai was honored to be the only international school in Shanghai to welcome Gerald Wirth, Artistic Director of the Vienna Boys Choir to run a series of workshops during his recent China tour. Dulwich choristers of all ages were able to participate in rehearsal sessions with the opportunity to benefit from Gerald’s experience of training one of the World’s top boys’ choirs.

The relationship between Dulwich and the Vienna Boys Choir has been a long-standing one with the first visit by Dulwich Students to Vienna having taken place in 2004. The Vienna tour has now become an annual fixture for the DCS music department with a group of choristers departing to Austria each June and performing in prestigious European concert halls and churches. The tour is open to all DCS choir members but is of particular benefit to older students who are considering their musical future, giving them a unique chance to explore and develop their musical talents.

For two Dulwich students, a future career in music became a step closer following this experience.  In 2011 Lilly Duncan became one of the very few girls to audition and be accepted to join the Vienna Boys’ Choir, while this year, 10-year-old Thomas Speciel also successfully auditioned and is now a full-time boarder at the choral school. Recent Dulwich graduate Holly Brooke, who also attended the tour several times, was this year awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
