dulwich-shanghai-book-weekThe first week of March was Book Week at Dulwich College Shanghai. All was hushed in the Senior School at Dulwich College Shanghai on Wednesday morning as students and staff took part in ‘Drop Everything and Read’ as part of the Book Week celebrations. Time was taken from the Personal, Social and Health Education program in order to emphasize the importance of reading, not simply as an academic pursuit, but as an important relaxation and personal development method for young people. Students spent an hour reading with their form tutors and invited staff guests, and all work and modern technological distraction ceased for that short time to allow the students and teachers to focus on reading for pleasure – be it fiction or non-fiction – across a full range of genres.

Other Book Week highlights in the school included the English Department promoting the intrinsic vale of reading through a variety of activities. Students across the year groups created their own book by entering a creative writing competition. The best entries from each year will go to compiling an anthology and then be entered in an international competition.

Other competitions during the week included a Poetry Slam and a Literary Terms Quiz. Students also had to complete their "Bookbuster" reading scheme that they pursue throughout the year, encouraging them to read challenging literature from a diverse range of genres, periods and places.

In addition, they took part in a "Bookbuddy" swap where they exchanged bookmarks with a friend with a particular, recommended title. The students will then meet to discuss the choices their friend made.

Teachers also anonymously submitted their top 10 books of all time on a display for students to try to match the list with the teacher. The only way to do this was, of course, to discuss the lists with their teachers. To catch the wave of enthusiasm, a Book Fair was held in the library to sell a wide range of new and classical titles.
