With the grand opening of the new Zhong Xin Elementary School on May 14, Tom Hawkins, Head of School at International School of Beijing (ISB), who for two years led much of this enormous school rebuilding effort, returned to Mianyang City for the dedication with other key contributors to the project - Theresa Chao, Donna Taylor and Lorina Barbalas.

On May 24, Zhong Xin Elemtary School students will be studying in their new campus, including their first computer lab with 30 computers (donated by Intel); their first library with 12,000 volumes (11,000 volumes donated by ISB students, with shelves, chairs and tables donated by ISB as well); a 150-seat lecture hall, and 18 classrooms. In the coming months, thanks to the Chinese Red Cross and the local government, the children will have a new cafeteria with tables and chairs donated by ISB, a new dormitory to house 700 of the 1300 students, and a new track and field area. This school will now be the best-equipped of the 200 schools in Santai County, and the pride of the community!

The work had begun in the aftermath of 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province, when 1200 students of Zhong Xin Elementary lost their school. The effort for rebuilding the school was led by many members of the ISB community, championed by parents, students and staff, and enthusiastically and generously supported by corporate partners, school administrators, the local government and a knowledgeable charitable organization; Compassion Education Foundation.

Zhong Xin Elementary was dedicated as Shunyi Compassion School this May.

Tom Hawkins, said the trip to Zhong Xin Elementary School was a highlight of his career as an educator, and one of the most rewarding things he has participated in personally. “I took all of you with me in spirit, and your good will for the people of Zhong Xin was very much appreciated.”
