concordia-natinoal-bee-bowlOn February 11, Concordia International School Shanghai (Concordia) students showcased their history knowledge in the National History Bowl and Bee at SAS Pudong. The National History Bowl and Bee, which began last year, are academic quiz competitions for students aged 13-18. This year’s competition was held for the first time in Asia and 10 local teams competed.

The History Bowl is a team event and the Concordia team went undefeated in the tournament, winning the championship game against SMIC by a score of 280 to 150. The team included Maddy Crispell, Jonathan Tan, T. Alex Chen, Alan Liu, Allen Wang, and Chris AuYeung.

Meanwhile, the History Bee competition is an individual competition. At the varsity level, (16 and over) Jonathan Tan took first and Maddy Crispell took second. At the junior varsity level, (under 16) Allen Wang took first and Chris AuYeung took second.

According to Team Captain Maddy Crispell, “History Bowl covers far more than is offered at school. AP history courses obviously help prepare you for the Bee and Bowl, but I’ve found that I’ll often learn something in Quiz Bowl before I learn it in class. A class will tend to be broader, whereas Quiz Bowl far more specific. In addition, Asian history courses aren’t common, but the Bowl was 50% Asian history.”

With their victories, the Concordia team qualified to travel to the History Bee and Bowl national championship in Washington, D.C. on April 28, 2012.
