CISS 1 It was hard to ignore the buzz of excitement on campus at Concordia International School Shanghai on Monday, September 1, 2008, as students, parents and faculty came together again to kick start the 2008-09 school year. Along with the new school year, the reunion came with a flurry of chatter, giggles, high-fives and hugs, with the hubbub heightened by the excitement of Concordia’s 10-year anniversary celebrations.

With monthly events planned throughout the coming school year, the Concordia community has much to look forward to. Students and faculty were delighted to receive commemorative baseball caps and tote bags bearing the new 10-year logo as well as a surprise treat from Hershey’s chocolate company – Hershey’s signature “Kisses”. And everyone is eagerly anticipating the year’s main celebratory event, scheduled for the evening of Saturday, April 25, 2009, which promises to be an elegant gala celebration. Even sooner, on Saturday, October 11, 2008, Concordia will be proud to host American Christian song artist and performer, Don Wharton.

Concordia was founded in 1998 with only 22 students, 14 teachers and 10 administrative staff in what was then a new section in Shanghai – the residential Jinqiao neighborhood of Pudong. Today, the school has more than 1,000 students representing nearly 30 different nationalities taught by more than 130 teachers in four purpose-built facilities. This academic year Concordia will celebrate an eighth graduating class with graduates continuing to enroll in the world’s finest universities.

Concordia welcomed Head of School, Dr. James Koerschen, at the start of the 2007-08 school year, following an announcement by Concordia’s Board of Directors through the LCMS’s call process. He serves as Concordia’s fourth Head of School. Dr. Koerschen, a veteran educational administrator, was a natural choice for the school.

“Concordia is excited to celebrate the achievements of the past 10 years this school year,” Dr. Koerschen said, “and to recognize how God has truly blessed this very special community.”
