Concordia Nurtures Youngest Learners’ Love of School

concordia-news-succesfulstart3The youngest learners at Concordia International School Shanghai began the school year with an easy, low-stress transition into the classroom thanks to the Elementary School’s Successful Start program. Because young children can easily be overwhelmed by new situations, the Successful Start program allows them to ease into their new environment in small groups, visiting classrooms, meeting teachers and classmates, in a way that relieves anxiety and fosters social learning that benefits children, families, and teachers.

For the first three days of school, small groups of Preschool-3 students attend 90-minute classroom sessions, while their parents attend helpful information sessions. The students adjust to the classroom environment by engaging with their teachers and classmates. Later, students attend three half-day classes with their whole class, before starting their regular full-day sessions for the rest of the school year.

The transition for most of the Preschool students started in spring of 2016; when the Concordia admissions office sponsored events for incoming students, complete with playtime, snack time, story time and a ride on the school bus. Students were also invited to join current students and parents at the ES spring carnival and track/field fun day. Parents were excited to see their children engaging in their new school environment. Attending these events alongside their children gave New Concordia parents a chance to make connections with other parents before the new school year. While there is no way to alleviate all the tears and worries associated with attending school for the first time, programs such as this certainly get children, parents and teachers off to a successful start.
