Winning your school’s first-ever APAC championship, as a senior, on your home court – it’s what sports dreams are made of. For senior basketball captain Heather Taylor that dream is now a reality.

The Concordia Girls Varsity team won Concordia’s first-ever APAC championship by defeating HKIS 50-34. From February 2-4, Concordia International School Shanghai hosted the APAC Basketball tournament, with twelve teams from six schools competing. Brent International School of Manila won the boy’s championship and the Concordia boys finished third.

Taylor has been playing basketball since she started at Concordia in the 5th Grade. According to Taylor, “Finally winning APAC as a senior and on my home court during probably my last organized basketball game ever, was to say the least, incredible. The buildup of emotions over the last three years from all the other lost APAC championships I have been in finally had been released. When that final buzzer went off, I felt free.”

An all-school opening ceremony kicked off on the championship and included performances from the Concordia cheerleaders and the Chinese lion and dragon dancers, plus the debut of the new Concordia Phoenix mascot. The event was a multi-faceted media experience with student and faculty bloggers and play-by-play audio streaming live at

Concordia’s community was a huge support to the APAC tournament. Athletic Director Chris Bishop commented, “Everyone came out to watch games and cheer. Our Elementary classrooms each adopted a team. The teams visited the classrooms, had recess with the students and taught them school cheers. Our high school student council made huge posters of our players that were displayed on campus. Our awesome PSO group ran a concession stand, provided kids with thunder-sticks to cheer with at games, organized a t-shirt sale, and much more. Finally, the biggest help were the homestays. APAC events don’t happen without homestays, so thank you to the Concordia families.”
