las-cs-trip-2On 24 March 2014 over 70 students and staff members of Shanghai Livingston American School (LAS) traveled to Shenzhen for their community service trip. While in Shenzhen the students participated in a variety of community service activities, including restoring a garden area for a local community center. It was challenging but satisfying for all the students. In addition to the community service activities, students were able to mix in some recreational time by biking or surfing. The students all agreed that it was a fun and rewarding community service trip. They also had the opportunity to participate in activities such as painting and making kites.

Community service is an integral part of the Secondary student curriculum at LAS. All Secondary students are required to complete at least 25 hours of community service each school year. LAS fosters an environment for community service that reinforces the school’s core values of being creative thinkers, compassionate citizens, proficient communicators and confident individuals.

“The community service program also advocates meaningful services opportunities and personal growth for the students,” says Faustina Martinez, LAS Principal.

The students learned many valuable lessons in giving back to the community through the community service activities. They are looking forward to their next opportunity to earn community service credit.
