cisb-expo-sGrade 11 students of the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) visited the World Expo in Shanghai during the second week of May. During the 5-day trip, the students had the chance to appreciate modern innovations displayed at the Expo. They also visited historical sites in Shanghai and Hangzhou to further their knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture.

As written in the journal by Janet, a CISB grade 11 IB student, “During the five days we spent in Shanghai and Hangzhou, we flocked to the World Expo, took a thousand pictures (literally) in front of each Expo Pavilion, took boat rides on the West Lake, and visited ancient pagodas. The Expo left us in a state of awe as we looked upon the creative pavilions of each country. Australia wowed the crowd with a floor to ceiling display of revolving digital TVs and Switzerland stole the show at its pavilion with cable car rides up to its roof. The British Pavilion stood out with its unique design; millions of bendable clear wires stuck out of it to create the illusion that it was a giant shimmering seed in the middle of a grey landscape. Its display was also awe-inspiring. We were led into a dark room at the core of the pavilion that was composed of seeds displayed in small illuminated glass cubes. The light came in from the clear wires on the outside of the pavilion, and the room looked like a futuristic laboratory that most people would only expect to see in movies."
