3e-yijingOn 14 March, Professor Yi Jin from the Faculty of Education at Beijing Normal University was invited to talk with 3e International School parents about China’s 2011 curriculum standards and their implications for Chinese Language Arts instruction.

Professor Yi spoke of the new emphases in the curriculum standards on Chinese Language Arts. In the current standards, more attention is given to strategies that children can use to identify Chinese characters rather than placing a focus on how many characters they can memorize. Now, children are expected to read much more and form their own individualized responses. It is critical to maintain children’s interest and confidence in writing by empowering them to write on topics that interest them and to write for authentic purposes. Yi also emphasized the importance of children viewing themselves as authors and having varied opportunities to experience the authentic process of writing, including brainstorming, drafting, editing and sharing their work with others.

Yi ended her presentation with a discussion on how parents could support children to learn Chinese in fun and meaningful ways. She also acknowledged that more age-appropriate and high-quality reading materials need to be written and identified for continuous Chinese language development for children in both local and international schools.
