youth-orchestra-visit-to-hqisHong Qiao International School (HQIS) participated as the co-organizer for the second iteration of the Chinese-French Youth Music Festival. HQIS invited the Carpe Diem C.C. Orchestra from France to visit their school on 28 February 2018, making this event one of the official Chinese-French Youth Music Festival activities. The Chinese-French Youth Orchestra was on campus 1:15pm to 4:30pm and participated in a gift exchange, robotics competition, and capped it off with a world-class orchestra performance in the Rainbow Bridge Theater.

The Carpe Diem C.C. Orchestra is one of the biggest youth orchestras in Europe, growing over the course of the past 13 years. They were invited to Shanghai to enhance international relationships between Chinese and French music through cooperation and communication with local young musicians. HQIS students were able to interact and communicate with the Chinese-French International Youth Orchestra members throughout their visit. They were able to discuss similarities and differences in their educational experiences and how it affected their personal growth. The Middle and High School students were also able to get a couple tips on how to approach their orchestra instruments and improve their practice habits to maximize their music education results.

Students from Grade 4 to High School prepared gifts to welcome the orchestra members, including an HQIS T-shirt as well as a personalized card welcoming them to Shanghai and a short introduction to HQIS. These tokens of good will were well received by the orchestra members, who were surprised by the kindness and creativity of the hand-written cards that were given to them. Once the children got a chance to meet and greet, they moved on to the robotics competition.

HQIS partner Gee-Ro Robotics set up a “robot soccer” pitch for HQIS students to compete with the Chinese-French Youth Orchestra. The matches were intense, with both sides doing their absolute best to win each match, and loud cheers coming from each side when points were scored. The robotics games ended up in a tie once time was up.

Once these activities wrapped up, the orchestra headed to the theater to set up for their performance. The Rainbow Bridge Theater filled up rather quickly, with a capacity crowd filling every seat in the house. After a short introduction by Nicholas Howard and Bryan Ashby, The Carpe Diem C.C. Orchestra delighted the audience with a masterful performance of classical Western and Chinese compositions. Their hard work and talent was obvious from the very first note, filling the theater with what will remain one of the best musical performances to take place at HQIS for a long time.

As an international school, HQIS plays a key role in both developing and maintaining international ties. It was a pleasure being able to host the Chinese-French Youth Orchestra at the campus.
