On the afternoon of 26 October, Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) proudly hosted the annual Canadian Chamber of Commerce Educational Fair at its Hongqiao Campus.

The fair was divided into two sections: an exhibition space was set up to allow student service providers and post-secondary institutions to provide information one-on-one to fair-goers, and classrooms that presented seminars on topics ranging from student visas to relocation and admission requirements.

Students stumbled on themselves to get the attention of McGill during the breakout session. From wall to wall there were students from the Shanghai area eagerly waiting to learn more about McGill University in Montreal. There was an invigorating discussion via Skype with the International Admission Director which left many inspired to pursue their career passion.

With some of the best post-secondary institutions present such as McGill and the UBC Sauder School of Business, the event was a perfect opportunity for students and families to learn about Canadian academic programs, understand what they are looking for in candidates and establish multiple aspects of their academic lives.

There has been an increase in interest of SCIS seniors applying to Canadian universities, which is attributed to the recent political climate in the USA and Canada’s strong stance on human rights.  In addition, the cost is attractive when compared to the USA and UK.  New York Times recently confirmed the SCIS trend in the article, “Canadian Colleges See Surge of Foreign Students. It’s Not Just Politics”. They go as far to suggest more students are applying to Canadian universities because the country has affordable healthcare, safe cities, easy immigration policy and a more relaxed environment in general.

Every year, outstanding SCIS graduates move on to attend top post-secondary institutions around the world, and every year SCIS continues to actively look for ways to facilitate the research process for its students and ensure a right fit for everyone involved.
