On December 4, Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) had the privilege of welcoming the Right Honorable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada and Mrs. Laureen Harper along with ministers and other government dignitaries to its campus.cisb-pm-visit-2s

They were greeted by Dr. Francis Pang, Chairman of the Board, Mrs. Jill Jollineau, Principal of CISB along with His Excellency David Mulroney, Canadian Ambassador to China. Two Grade 1 student representatives, Amber and Solene presented bouquets to the Prime Minister and Mrs. Harper on behalf of the CISB school community.

The Prime Minister and Mrs. Harper entered the gym to a resounding welcome of Chinese drumming, cheering and flag waving. The elementary students of Ms. Klimack’s art class prepared a wonderful banner laden with symbols of Canada- beavers, maple leaves, Canadian coins, Canada geese, Inuksuks and flags.

Two Chinese Olympians were present to pass the torch relay. Ms. Yang Yang ran with the torch in Prince Edward Island, Canada in November and Ms. Ye Qiaobo will run in January in British Columbia, Canada. The three mascots of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics were on hand to entertain the students and present a “high five” to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister addressed the students, teachers and guests, encouraging them to watch the Winter Olympics either in Canada or on their televisions around the world. Each homeroom had a student representative to shake hand with the Prime Minister and had their group photo taken with the Prime Minister, the mascots, the Olympians and Mrs. Harper.

The Canadian International School of Beijing offers the Canadian curriculum to over 600 students representing over 50 nationalities. This visit signifies the importance and recognition of CISB promoting Canadian education in China and around the world.
