BWYA Welcomes New Deputy Principal

Another exciting year has started at Beijing World Youth Academy. Besides a renovated Wang Jing campus, the new school year brings with it some new faces among the students and staff. One new member of the community is Pat Martin Seehusen, who has been appointed Deputy Principal. She will work with Principal Shane O’Day to ensure the successful delivery of the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programs this year.

Originally from the UK with a background in Mathematics & Computer Science and graduate credentials in Mathematics Education and International School Education, Pat brings a wealth of practitioner and leadership experience.

Pat and her husband Andy, who is BWYA’s TOK Coordinator and University counselor, have logged time in schools on three continents, but it was a unique series of events at their last place of residence that finally landed the couple in Beijing. They were working in Tripoli at the international school attended by many expatriate children as well as the grandson of Col. Muammar Qaddafi. As the Libyan unrest swelled in mid-February, a decision was made to temporarily close the school, and the Seehusens left for the UK via Tunisia. “We left thinking we would probably be back in two weeks,” says Pat. “All our teaching materials, our clothes, we left everything behind.”

Unable to return, it presented a new opportunity: a return to China. Having lived in Shanghai a few years ago, they were happy to come back. While the two cities are quite different, the Seehusens are settling in well. “The people of Beijing are so friendly and helpful," says Pat. “And we like the family feeling at BWYA, we haven’t felt this in any other school we’ve worked in."

BWYA is lucky to have Pat and Andy on their team. Having had the priviledge of working with both of them, they bring a wealth of experience both professional and humane to the business of teaching.
