BWYA Students Stage Shakespeare’s Macbeth

Pre-IB Language A English students at Beijing World Youth Academy (BWYA) performed scenes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth on April 7. After studying the play for four weeks, students chose select scenes to perform in whatever setting they liked as long as it kept with the spirit of the play.

Many students chose to set their scenes in movies that share the same themes as Macbeth. Among this year’s highlights were scenes that were set in the movies Transformers and The Simpsons. One was even set in a mental hospital to help underscore Macbeth’s transformation from war hero to tyrant.

This is the third year BWYA teachers Ms. Roseanne Etcheber and Mr. Devin Pitcher have organized this event as a way for students to engage more critically with the text as well as have fun with a creative dramatic performance. This year proved to be some of the best performances.
