BWYA May Fair Fundraising for Life Saving Operation

Beijing World Youth Academy (BWYA) held its annual community ‘May Fair’ event on 18 May, with students and parents coming together to offer international food and drinks, exciting games and engaging performances. As always, all the proceeds from the event were donated to charity.

This year, BWYA cooperated with the Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control to raise funds to help an 11-month-old baby, Zhao Yi Ran, who was born with a congenital disease called biliary atresia. Zhao Yi Ran needed to have an operation to allow his liver to function – without this operation, his condition is 100% fatal.

Through the creativity and generosity of the BWYA school community, a May Fair record was broken and over 32,000 RMB was raised – enough to pay the final installment for the Kasai surgical procedure which would save Zhao Yi Ran’s life. Baby Zhao has since undergone the surgery, and was all smiles upon being released from the ICU, looking forward to his first birthday later in June. Ms. Zhang Xiu Ming of the CFHPC thanked BWYA for their involvement, saying, “Health is the best gift you could have given him.”

BWYA students were particularly excited to participate in the charitable event for a great cause. "May Fair brings our entire school together," said Sarah Shen, a BWYA 8th grader who was happy to be at such a fun event "where we do some good and make a difference."
