bwya-history-beeBeijing World Youth Academy (BWYA) recently hosted the latest Beijing round of the prestigious International History Bee and Bowl competition versus Dulwich College. And BWYA students took full advantage of being the home team, picking up two out of three trophies and seven medals.

BWYA has a good pedigree in this competition in which individual students and teams take part in quizzes at
a national and regional level with the view to qualifying for the inaugural International History Olympiad in the US this summer.

Last year, BWYA students also took part in the event, making it through to the Asian regional finals after being named National Middle School Champions.

The standard of historical knowledge on display was extremely high for both teams and each round proved to be a hard fought competition. Competitors from both schools have now qualified for the next round in Thailand.

Terry Tang, who competed for BWYA and won a bronze medal in the middle school division, as well as being part of the Junior Varsity Team that also won a trophy, said that it was fun to take part and that he was very happy to be part of the team. He added: “I think we are a good team because we don’t rush our answers and we prepare well. We have a History club at BWYA and everyone who goes to the club is really passionate about history and they stay in the club for a long time. This makes it easier for us to put together a strong team for the International History Bee and Bowl events.”

Teammate Maxim Bembinov, who won bronze in the Individual Junior Varsity Bee and was a also a member of the Junior Varsity team, said: “This was my first competition and there are so many topics covered that it’s difficult to prepare for but it was great to take part and I am looking forward to competing again next round.”

BWYA’s History teacher and Head of Department, Ramon Villar, concluded: “Thank you to the  International History Bee and Bowl for giving us the opportunity to host the event and thank you to all the students who took part and worked so hard. They really earnt their medals and trophies.”
