bwya-foundling-hillBeijing World Youth Academy hosted its first original musical performance, Foundling Hill, at the performing arts centre on its new Laiguangying Campus on 23 and 24 January.

Foundling Hill is a folk musical centered around a group of teenage orphans who survive on a palmful of water a day in a dangerously dry and irrevocably polluted, post-apocalyptic wasteland. Right when the last water supplies dwindle for Thena and her tribe, a terrifying gang known only as ‘The Drought’ arrives, bringing with them the temptation to trust again. The book, lyrics and music were written by award-winning playwright and BWYA teacher Karmia Olutade, and the entire show was acted and produced by BWYA students.

The profits from ticket sales were donated to the Lanzhou Wuxingping Migrant Children’s Care and Education Center, a new school in Gansu Province for underprivileged children of minorities and migrants in the area. Children from the school were also invited to the BWYA IPC campus for the day to attend classes and view the performance. Over 600 audience members attended the three public performances of Foundling Hill and 60,000 RMB was raised for the charity.
