BWYA Celebrates UN Day

bwya-un-day1There was a real international atmosphere at Beijing World Youth Academy (BWYA) as students and teachers took advantage of the extended homeroom period to celebrate UN day on 24 October.

With such a diverse range of nationalities represented by the student body and faculty, there was no shortage of inspiration for decorating homerooms, dressing up in national costumes, or bringing in signature finger-food dishes for schoolmates to share. And every continent (apart from the big icy ones) was on display with a special prize on offer for the best decorated homeroom.

The event was organized by modern languages teacher Catherine Loza and her team of student volunteers, who arranged for each pupil to have their very own BWYA passport on the day. Students had to answer quiz questions or complete tasks in each ‘country’ before they could collect a stamp in their passport, and there were prizes on offer for students who collected the most stamps.

Chidinme Emenike said it had taken two weeks of planning to turn her homeroom into a mini-Cuba for the morning. “We stayed behind after class on Thursday to decorate the room,” she added, “we had a mini-beach, a ‘mocktail’ bar, salsa dancing and palm trees everywhere. It was a lot of hard work but totally worth it.

“Nigeria was really good, but I’m biased as that is my country. UN day was great as we got to learn a little bit about a lot of countries and experience their cultures.”

English and Drama teacher Kelvin Lamplough was a judge for the best homeroom competition, and said he had a fantastic morning touring the school. “ My highlights included meeting the lovely little parrot in Argentina and eating truffles. I ate piles of cheese and eggs and mini pies and had a great time tapping my feet to samba rhythms and seeing all the effort everyone put in to costumes, cooking and decorations. Congratulations to all the teachers and students who made the morning one of my best at BWYA.”

The prize for the winning homeroom will be an all expenses paid pizza party.
