bsb-royal-artOn the 30th, 31st and 1st of April, the British School of Beijing (BSB) became the first international school to host a Royal Academy life drawing workshop. Peter Feroze travelled from London to direct three workshops for BSB students and members of the wider community.

The Royal Academy of Art, based in London has been running drawing and painting workshops in the UK since 1989. The purpose of the workshops was to inspire creativity and imagination in our students’ drawing and to challenge students’ perceptions of working from observation. The students created a series of images working with different materials and at different paces to create drawings from a model in different poses.

The students focused on their feelings when drawing from imagination and from observation, recognizing the constraints that they place on themselves when working from observation and realizing the freedom they feel when there are no rules working from imagination. As the day-long work shop progressed students could see how their work was becoming more open to ideas and color was becoming more prominent in their drawing; exploring form and using marks to create interesting pictures of the model and developing the whole composition. A reflective writing exercise allowed students to explore how they felt about their work and recognize the new skills they were learning by writing a letter to a friend about all the different activities they had done and how successful they were.

Every student commented afterwards how much they enjoyed the workshop, that their confidence had grown, and that they would take with them what they had learned to use in their future art work!
