Britannica International School Shanghai students celebrated literature with storytelling, buddy-reading sessions, competitions, fundraisers for charity, workshops and assemblies during Book Week at the beginning of March.

britannica-book-week-2The event, which is designed to encourage pupils to enjoy new authors and books and get inspired to read, has become one of the key events in the school annual calendar.

Secondary pupils completed lots of activities on the week’s ‘Funny Ha Ha’ theme during their English lessons. They looked at how to write funny stories and wrote some great limericks during their lessons. And they enjoyed the buddy reading activity where they went to read to two different age groups from Early Primary years.

Upper Primary groups designed their very own humorous book covers that showcased a funny main character being inspired by funny literature. Children considered the names of the characters, their appearance, as well as their mannerisms, actions and hobbies.

In Lower Primary School, students got to read many funny books focused on improving their reading skills. In the Early Years, favorite books and stories were shared and children loved the opportunity to visit the school’s book fair and book swap events.

The Book Week also welcomed the visit by Ciaran Murtagh, author and funny man extraordinaire. He worked closely with all of the children, enthusing their excitement for reading, writing and all things English.

As a unanimous decision by all organizers, the Book Week this year carried a fundraising element for those less fortunate, in terms of access to books. Students jumped all over it and read hard so that somebody else’s life can be enhanced by access to reading materials. Over 9,000 RMB was raised for the charity Room to Read.
