ycis-bj-book-weekFrom 10 to 13 March, Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) held a Book Week for students of Kindergarten and Primary. The week included a Book Fair every day, offering the YCIS Beijing community the chance to buy various collections such as Chinese and English children’s books and books for parenting strategies, cooking, travel and the history of Beijing and China.

One highlight of the week was the visit by author Jan Latta. Having previously worked in advertising in Sydney, London and Hong Kong, she came face-to-face with a mountain gorilla in Rwanda, which inspired her to write stories about endangered animals. Her presentation with the students included descriptions of her experiences in Africa, the process of writing her collection of 12 books and a focus on the importance of animal preservation.

The Book Week concluded with a Character Dress-Up Day in which all Kindergarten and Primary students wore costumes displaying their favorite character from a book they had read. During the day, presentations were made for the best fictional story and poems written by the students themselves, who also shared their favorite books with peers in the homerooms.

The YCIS Beijing Book Week is designed to inspire students to read so that they can expand their vocabulary and imagination. During regular school weeks, teachers hold scheduled classes for students in the Primary Library, which keeps over 20,000 books in Chinese, English and dual-language.
